Course Content
The subject matter of the master’s degree course in Security Management and Enterprise Security is based on the challenges that confront security managers in the security industry, in consulting and in businesses and government agencies. The programme teaches you the necessary skills to work professionally with security issues.
The master’s degree course draws on several disciplines. It includes the acquisition of well-rounded management and legal knowledge as well as the study of fundamental IT topics and an examination of ethical issues. In this way the master’s degree course thoroughly prepares you to fill management or interdepartmental positions in the security industry, in enterprise security and in governmental and organizational security.

Course Modules
Module 1: Foundations
In the first course module, you learn to define a situation assessment, identify security risk scenarios, and create, analyze and evaluate situation assessments. You will examine the function and goals of enterprise security, and consider the concept of security from the legal perspective. You will develop an outline of security organization and learn how to find, apply and interpret national and international security regulations. You will identify security issues throughout the value chain and study the foundations of security management.
Module 2: Implementation
In this module you will learn to distinguish between different types of contracts in regard to security concerns, to assess the relevance of property protection and corporate values, and to work with tenders for security services. You will examine the structural and procedural organization of security management and distinguish between different organizational forms of enterprise security. You will study the relevant provisions of labour and data protection law, and discuss security-related personnel requirements in regard to hiring, assignments and staff development. In addition, you will gain insights into pertinent engineering and IT issues, and develop specific preventive measures.
Module 3: Implementation, Enforcement and Continuing Development
In this module you will learn the possible sanctions in case of security violations, and the legal provisions regarding necessity and self-defence. You will examine the significance of preventive and reactive components, and the consequences of the activities you are involved in organizing from a business management perspective. In view of the leadership responsibilities connected with security management, you will also consider human factors in the prevention and handling of security incidents.
Module 4: General Management
This module strengthens your basic management skills, and imparts insights into key processes in the activities of modern organizations. You acquire the general skills you need as a security manager in the areas of change management, enterprise management and controlling, and project management and practice transfer. Special attention is given to ensuring the sustainability of the skills you acquire in the course, and transferring them to actual practice.
Module 5: Personal Skills
In the Knowledge Management, Leadership, Cross-cultural Communication and Practice Research courses, you strengthen your skills in those areas of personal relations that are indispensable to specialists and managers, in security management and business as in other fields. You will broaden and reinforce your personal abilities in dealing with knowledge, people and different cultures and roles, including expert cultures, in your professional environment.
Module 6: Master’s Thesis
To conclude your course of study, you will write a scientifically grounded master’s thesis that connects theory and practice. Your thesis may be on a specific project from your own professional context, or on a general topic in the field of security management or enterprise security. The objective in either case is to discuss an issue that is relevant to practice using the knowledge and methods you have acquired and augmented during your course of study at DUW, and to propose an answer based on your discussion. In developing your master’s thesis, as in all other phases of your studies at DUW, you will receive academic supervision and thorough guidance counselling.
